Re-shooting

We decided to re-shoot the opening scene of our music video as we had a few faults that could not be edited through available software, for example we where unsure of what to do with the dialogue, it was not clear or adequate enough to be used, and if we decided to add dialogue in a voice-over, it may have looked amateur. Also, another major problem was the cake throw; the size of the cake was far too small and the aftermath of the throw wasn't shown. In the re-shoot we bought a bigger cake and three of the same so we could re-shoot from different angles to create a dynamic shot.

We also wanted to build suspense and mystery of the   characters at the beginning of the sequence, so in the re-shoot we filmed below the face for a matter of seconds. Furthermore, we also replaced the previous newspaper with a 'Business' paper as it mimicked the  male characters 'formal' and 'important' demographic. We decided to incorporate a crossword  as a basis for the characters to communicate, however  there was not a crossword within the newspaper so we had to lightly cellotape one inn.
A problem we faced was that the newspaper we got it from was much smaller then the broadsheet we where now using so it looked unrealistic. A resolution to this was placing it on the right side of the paper so there would be no shadows when  shooting and it made it possible for him to fold the newspaper on the table. Another problem we faced  was that when we filmed all the cake throwing we assumed that we had done enough, so decided as a treat to ourselves and our helper we would share half of the last cake, however we had realised that we  forgot a shot and hate to somehow fix a broken cake;  but with lots of icing mix left we managed to retrieve it.

More Website Research

I love using Katy Perry as an example as she is the exact replica we want to convey of our own artist Xena. She represents Pop music as she is seen as such an inspiration in the music industry, therefore her website is very valuable to my research. I will start off my saying that the most surprising feature of her website which I noticed straight away was the layout; there was no menu bar but instead a long page of information. Again like the previous website I looked at it doesn't talk much about the artist on a personal level, although when it comes to my own website I think it is important to add a Bio of information. Moving on, one thing that pops out at me is the '#DARKHORSEVIDEO' which obviously means a new music video, it is a good idea to use terminology that applies to her target audience; young adult and even older as Twitter becomes more popular in popular culture. I like the range of images that they use; hints of innocence and adventure which makes her more appealing. Furthermore the use of different fonts and colours work well together on this particular occassion although I do believe that as she is such a strong generic artist who is known to wear crazy outfits; the colour scheme and imagery could be more creative. I also like the how the background images move as you scroll; its modern and creates a 3D motion which is interesting. On an informative basis, it provides details into upcoming events including an attractive map. It also provides videos of her most reason music video and also images of innovative album art designs.

Overall

I like the use of using two consistent colours that work well together and also represent the artist, I also like the use of visuals and how they are compact and clear. I particularly like the background image being Iggy as it reminds you that she is part of the website and I preferred that to other random imaging, although the slideshow of images was very exciting. If i was to improve this website i would include more writing, maybe a bio about the artist or a personal message from the artist as it is quite formal.

Starting my website

My Website
I have found it very hard to make my website, however the design was quite easy to create as I felt that the themes I was going for would be space-like, mystical and modern. Using a black and white background would be a good basis for lots of colour. The image on my homepage is favourable to me as it sets a simple but effective, and the use of colourful links and pictures popped out the page. I created an Instagram account called 'XenaMelody' and a twitter account '@XenaMelody'. I am finding it difficult to make my online store as the software is quite complex to me, apart from this my website is going quite well.

My favourite Music Video

Lip-syncing

We decided to use the song Icona Pop 'I Love It' as we knew that when it came o the real music video we would be editing it in a similar style. Once we finished the filming we realised the lighting wasn't good and it made it harder when editing to cut the music to the lip-sync as it was harder to visualize. Next time we will probably shoot outside or somewhere with brighter lighting. We had difficulties with editing as it was only a short 30 second piece meaning we had to adjust the clips to fit exactly where the lyric was, this was hard because it was fidgety and the pace of the song was very fast. After looking at the edit we realise that the zoom inn of 'I Love It' is not completely matching, but we have comprehended how we will correct it for next time.

Music Video Theory

Original Little Red Riding Hood Narrative Storyboard

This narrative has typical features of a conventional story, using an Equilibrium, the Disruption, Recognition, Solution and finally the New Equilibrium.

We transformed the narrative to make an appealing music video. We did this by using different camera angles and importing humour and mystery. For example, we began our video with a close up of Little Red Riding Hoods 'gangster' trainers, then her cape and then her 'grills'. These are a type of design that rappers wear on there teeth which are usually gold, this technique creates an enigma as we wonder who this person is, then a sense of humour when we discover it is Little Red Riding Hood. As the storyboard develops we see the wolves wearing silly feminine clothes and doing modern dancing (twerking) inside Grandmas house where there is abnormally a party. The grandma is on the DJ decks and she finally gets killed by a shredder. This narrative is completely different and far more interesting, these unique elements make a music video worth watching.

Unique Music Video

Opale - Sparkles and Wine

We chose this video as we felt it had really cool and mesmerising editing techniques; The video uses synesthesia as the beats change in time of the cuts and so do the colours,  this is an extremely clever technique when done properly and this video manages it perfectly. The shapes are complex and different, they become illusions and become  hypnotising as we create our own imagery of what we believe we can see through the complex shapes and the way they work together to create a work of art. This video is particularly unique as it uses one location, and one person in one position, they are reliant on the editing but we still find it extremely engaging as we are mesmerised by the artists movements. The use of  close ups are beneficial in making the audience grow an attachment to the singer, the use of shadows make it seem like the image is changing but it isn't, this becomes very interesting as we continue to watch it, particularly when she places her hands on her head and seems very confused; the use of shadows and the overlapping editing illusions we feel like the movements are acting as emotions.

Preliminary Storyboard

This is the storyboard for our Preliminary task. We decided to all individually make are own storyboards so when it comes nearer the time we can compare ideas and hopefully combine the ideas to make a better product. My storyboard is divided into six sections which I have roughly divided into 5 seconds per shot. The first stage is the establishing shot, we hope to film this in the studio with the main singer which will be Kirsten, lip-syncing with a microphone which we will borrow from the music department. The second stage is the idea of using the pillars near our school field, collectively 'free-styling' and messing around to fit the generic country-pop music that we have chosen; Taylor Swift - 22, This piece of music is very jolly and fun, so we want to mimic the feel. Thirdly, we hope to use the disappearing technique in our piece so using a tree would be the perfect way to do this, with us all taking part. The next step would be another shot of an instrument with another 'band member.' The next step is Kirsten lip-syncing on a bench outside our school, we are hoping to shoot in the outdoor areas of our school that are most aesthetically pleasing but one issue that could be a problem is school kids interrupting out filming. Lastly we are just want to get a simple shot of Kirsten singing in front of some nice flowers, we want to use a plainer background so that we can use another editing technique such as Multi-screen to make it more dimensional.

What makes a successful media video?

Known music videos

Robin Thicke - Blurred lines

This music video is good because although it is very simple, it is still interesting and makes you want to continue watching. They use props such as a chair and toy car and a sheep, this keeps the scene alive as there is only one location throughout, the performance is the main feature of the video that keeps it memorable. The video uses Voyeurism by including very good looking girls, we are interested in the relationship between the artist and the girls, the vibe is kept fun and sexy which makes it appealing to a wide audience. A lot of the video is freestyle dancing; it makes the watch very mellow and fun. There is one location used but the the use of props and camera angles are gripping and edgy and by using text on the screen such as  '#HASHTAG' although this fits into the modern age of social media I think it makes it seem quite cliche and will not be using it in music video.

Lana Del Ray - Ride

The video is very fanatical and dreamy in surreal surrounding of dessert and mountains on a tire swing. The colourisation makes Lana almost angelic in her setting, the areas can be really realistic but the lighting and her white clothes make her glowing, she is also dressed casually but her natural look makes her even more beautiful as we are seeing the other side to the glamorous celebrity lifestyle that we see on social networking. When she speaks at the beginning it reminds me of 'Lady Gaga' in 'Born this way' as it creates a deep serious tone or meaning behind the music and immediately makes us feel in a trance. The natural lighting allows the sun to come through softly almost making you feel like you are there with her.

Macklemore and Ryan Lewis - Cant hold us

The location and mis en scene of this music video is really original, the idea of snow and wolf costumes is really unique and it is used in a comparison with a deserted area of sand, pyramids and camels. The introduction puts the video in a serious tone, but the later comparison of wild and crazy fun, this spontaneity keeps the audience on edge. This later emerges as they walk from one dramatic scene to the ordinary streets of America. With plenty more variety of location, costume and mood it creates a mass of variety and is fun to watch, the locations are not just of wide variety but they are extremely unique and this makes it so much more intriguing. Macklemore's performance is also very lively and energetic with keeps the mood positive.

Drake - Started from the bottom

I like this music video because the song has a narrative behind it and it is also comedic at the same time, the scene in the supermarket is hilarious and the target audience of young adults will love that the artist can incorporate humour, even though he is talking about how wealthy he has become, he is still willing to open up about his life before which makes him identifiable to the audience.Using lip syncing and free style movements to a narrative of him as a child, then the supermarket sketch are all very different however they all work well together as the contrast becomes exhilarating. The performance by the artist is very upbeat and is enthusiastic which also gives the audience energy. The situations we see in his 'new' life make us feel apart of the antics, he lets us inside the party scenes with his friends which brings the audience closer, we are intrigued with the unique and wealthy locations he takes us to such as villas and private Jets.

Rihanna ft. Mikky Ekko - Stay

The song is very emotional for the singer 'Rihanna' which is evident with the performance and the lyrics. The main image of Rihanna in a bath is very interesting as it shows a vulnerable side of her that we are not used to seeing. As her life is in the public eye dramatically, the audience and her fans already feel like they know her, but the video gives us a better insight of her internally. Her vulnerability is also shown as she struggles to sing all the way through her song as she pauses in an emotional expression. Also the use of props and costume is very minimal, she doesn't wear make-up but this works as the viewers are attracted to things that are done/seen more privately.

Eminem - Cleanin' out my Closet

This video is very deep, as it matches to its emotional and honest lyrics. The story of the singers upbringing and the reincarnation of it with a young version of himself, this brings the audience closer to Eminem as they get to know more about the secrets of his past. The introduction is particularly interesting as they use a zoom technique towards an image of  door, this is a great way of creating tension and excitement as it opens the wall between the audience and the artist, as he opens the door to his life with personal information. The coverage in the studio is very unique as we don't usually see this in videos, but it conveys a sense of realness to the audience. The artist also uses synaesthesia with shadows on the artist in time with the beat, its deeper meaning is the representation of colours, the shadows create darkness reflecting the seriousness of the lyrics.

Birdy - Skinny Love

The setting is very old fashioned and isolated, it has a peaceful and relaxing feel to it which matches the soul of the song, the whole scene is very authentic and immediately strikes an emotive chord, we want to get to know the artist more at the beginning, as she draws us in with her soft nature, showing minimal shots of her close up we cling on to every word she says. Birdy looks very angelic which is appealing to the audience, this is because she looks very natural and raw. The fact that she is playing the piano at the beginning makes her seem more in touch with the song and the words being played, as it is her own song we see it as being special to the singer which makes it  become interesting to the audience, overall the mood is sad but magical.

Ed Sheeran - A Team

This video is reflective of a third person, although we do not makes a strong connection with the singer himself, the narrative behind the song is very meaningful which makes it so much more interesting. The use of realism which makes us feel like we are there as we watch her get on with her everyday life and reflect on the present. The use of the black ans white filter highlights the sadness of the video, at the beginning we establish that she has died and therefore looking back in time using the dark filter reflects the mood of the song. Her embrace of nature is endearing and the fact that she is beautiful draw us to her and we become slowly intrigued in her life.

Kendrick Lamar - Swimming Pools

An aspect of this video I really like is the reference to the title 'Swimming Pools' as he falls through the air into the water, it shows a vulnerability to him which most male rapper/R&B artists don't show which relates the the male 'ego'. The song title is displayed in a small format in white, it gives us a sense of emptiness until the interesting image appears.  As Kendrick falls into the water the camera films it from multiple angles with a black background which makes the scene really effective. He uses multiple locations that work together to create an overall mood. When the artist is in an empty room we realise that there is deep meaning behind the lyrics, he glamourises alcohol by showing a club scene where everyone is in high spirits, however the overall mood is not positive.

M.I.A - Bad Girls

The video is set in Sri Lanka as M.I.A grew up there meaning the video is a lot more personal then the lyrics convey. The location brings up closer to the artist as it is a special place to her, It is also very scenic and the scenes are shot on wide landscape with beautiful view, along with a wild performance packed full of choreography, crazy props and colourful outfits, it also includes a dangerous car scene which intertwines with the a wild horse ride, and a fire fuelled desert. The day scenes mix with the night scene which uses interesting colourful lighting and blingy clothing, matching the lyrics 'Chain hits my chest'.

Meeting 14/2/14

In today's lesson we decided to incorporate something that we hadn't seen or attempted to do before, making frames of different stages of a scene and colourising two contrasting colours per frame. We found it difficult to choose two colours that went together and complimented each other without making it look unclear or amateur. What we also found difficult with this technique was measuring the frame so that it they are parallel to one another, the software could not give us a mathematical estimation of where the frames needed to be so we had to branch out and use a ruler, the process was very tricky.

Pictures of Practice Shoots

* To set the scene we wanted to ensure that props that would fit the 50's setting; the tea pots, table cloth, the flowers and the cake stand where all elements we saw important in the circumstance.  We bought some cheap cakes to use as props and to keep the cast happy as we know that the filming process can be very tiring.

* We all had a turn with the camera as we all had different views on what we could film and how to film it; this was good as when it came to putting it on the editing software we had a variety of different angles and shots to work with.

* We tried to film a close up of Taran as he played the 'boring conservative husband'. He wore a suit and tie to fit in with the demographic, and we directed him to talk of about something that would appear boring to give the film a comedic feel. Although we will not be including the sound during editing, we believe that by using this technique it would make it appear more natural and realistic.

* We used props such as a mug of tea to give the film to make it seem old fashioned, traditional and dull. We also wanted the representation of the man to seem slightly chauvinistic and for the woman to be a typical 50's domestic housewife; we did this by focusing a lot of the attention on the man.

* When filming Katy throw the cake into Tarans face we had to find a comfortable position for the camera, we decided that having a close up that only displays half of his face would make the event seem more significant as the cake we used was not big, we did not want to make it seem minor or amateur.

Behind the Scenes

We decided to travel to South Bank and study places that we could film, we already had a few ideas of where we would like to film, one of these was the Tower Bridge. It was very cold and we didn't want Katy to wear lots of layers as we wanted to convey a feeling of fearlessness and rebellion to match the lyrics and genre. The only problem with filming on the Tower Bridge was that it was very busy, so it meant there was less room to film and public attention was unavoidable.

We used one of the sculptures that are currently scattered around the city as a prop that we can work around in terms of free style movement. The other use we have for it is the progressive countdown that can be used when editing, leading up to some sort of explosion.

* This was one of the sculptures in London that was supposed to on Liverpool Street until May. Unfortunately, when travelling to this location we realised that it was not there, this was extremely disappointing.

* The first lesson back from filming we uploaded all the footage to Adobe Premiere. We are going to edit all of our footage so far in with the lyrics, once done we will begin to film in our next location.

Meeting 16/12/13

Today we tried to get dates down to film over christmas time as by now our plans for the holidays are more clear. Although we have an online events calender which we fill in when we have plans, it has been hard to keep up with when everyone is free.

We have decided for this reason that we will film after our mocks which will finish mid January. We decided that Kirsten will be doing the filming and me and Nicola will be helping with the editing as well as directing with the filming.

Health and Safety

Risks we need to consider:

Paint: Although we are just going to use art paint, we have to make sure that when we do scenes that involves 'play fighting' that we are careful and keep it away from eyes etc.

Table flipping: In the opening scene of our music video we will be flipping a table or smashing plates, both of these can be dangerous so we are going to make sure the target areas are completely clear, as well as doing test runs to make sure it will not be dangerous.

Cake throwing: If we choose to do cake throwing we have to be careful that we don't get cake in anyone eye.

Meeting 12/12/13

Today we discussed the dates that we would be free to film over the next week and the Christmas holidays. We realised it would be very difficult to film next week as we have coursework deadlines, as well as this we are all going to see family around Christmas time. Another issue we have come across is the upcoming mocks.  These are being held in January, so due to revision and the rush to edit means it will be hard.

Meeting 10/12/13

We wanted to finish Storyboard that we had started, the process of planning has been a struggle as we all very different ideas of what we want in out video and how we will go about it. While we where story boarding we decided that our intro would be best silent, with as comedic feel to it which will break out into the music.

We came up with a visual schedule of the next week and agreed that if we had a clear view of what we wanted to do, we could attempt to do it in lesson time, but this is quite unrealistic as our individual thoughts are strong but collectively vague.

Planning

We often use social networking to arrange and organise plans for filming/editing/planning. It is a good was to create a group chat so we can all get involved easy and clearly.
