Preliminary

Techniques we included:

1. Multiscreen
2. Colourisation
3. Disappearing
4. Jump Cutting

We decided not to use Greenscreen as when we watched previous student music films we did not think the Greencreen was an attractive effect, and not completely necessary in a smaller time frame.

Evaluation:

What went wrong?
We felt that our film went really well but we could have used more interesting locations, outside of school to make it less student-like.

What worked?
We where worried that the lip-syncing wouldn't be on time as we used a different version of the song, but when editing i was very smooth.

what should you have done?
If we had the opportunity to do it again we would use a better ending shot to make it stand out, although we did use multiscreen we could have had Kirsten walk past the camera like they do in real music videos to really leave an outstanding end to the clip.

What you plan to do differently:
We would make the narrative more like a story instead of making it up as we went along.

What you plan to do differently that you didn't do at all:
We would dress up for the occasion obviously to match the genre.

As a group we discussed what locations and camera frames would be suitable for every lyrical line or word, so the action matches with the songs genre. Although it showed we all had similar ideas and agreed on a lot of the future performance, I am glad we didn't spend too much time on it as a lot of our filming was freestyle. As we had studio time and outside settings, we wanted to main outfits that would fit the brief and feel of the song. Taylor Swift was the vocalist therefore we wanted the clothing to be feminine and dressy. We used two separate outfits for the studio and outside scenes so it didn't confuse the audience but also gave the film some variety. In class we discussed suitable songs that we would all feel comfortable filming with, it also had to be known to all of us and the lyrics widely recognised so everyone was fully aware of the genre of the video and so it could easily be lip synced. We dedicated the first lesson on discussion and choosing the song. After this we did the filming and the last lesson we edited our film, and had to stay behind to ensure we finished to its best, One problem we faced in our group was attendance; as if one person did not attend we could not film. Problems we faced with the filming is that the battery did not always last the entire duration of the filming so we had to allocate some of out time to alternative tasks. Also out first filming session ended with us not remembering what SD card we used, this became a problem as other groups used the camera after us so our film could have been over-run.It became very tricky on the software to assure the lip-syncing was matching to the music. We used the disappearing edit by filming a tree by itself and then a separate film of us running behind it in separate orders which we knew would be quite technical to pull off, although it was tricky to make it perfect, with no-one being cut off in the shots we managed to do it correctly. Although we had a very small time frame to get it done, the film was our main priority, but I still managed to organise my blog and track my progress.

Pop Genre with Goodwin

Britney Spears - Work B**ch
October 2013

Notions of Looking

This picture illustrates the use of Vouyerism and notion of looking as the dancers as well as Britney wear explicit lingerie clothing and in there performance they are provocatively dancing. Visually the video has lots of exposing images surrounding the costumes and dance moves, they rarely use close ups which is quite un-conventional.

Intertextuality

Faith - Breathe

This music video was made in October 2009 and like Britney's music video uses the desert as a location. Faith Hill look sensual as she dances seductively on the desert sand. Although Britney does this also, the mood and mise en scene is still very different.

Demands of the record label

This video uses some close ups as a demand from the record label. This done to make her more seductive to her male audience, In her previous videos a lot of close ups have been used and they want to show consistency from the star image throughout her performances so the audience feel more in touch with her.

Genre Characteristics

Pop usually uses dramatic clothing, extensive dancers and crazy locations to create a pleasurable dynamic video that also generates a positive mood. They often have performers and choreography.

Links between lyrics and visuals

The meaning behind the song is that you need to work in order to get the luxuries in life, Britney talk of living in a mansion and having a Lamborghini, and then sings 'You better work b**ch. The link between lyrics and visuals for example the image to the left shows Britney whipping a women saying 'work b**ch'. Although this isn't represented very seriously it does use amplification through the repetition in lyrics.

Pop Genre

The Pop genre stands for 'Popular' which originated in the 1950's deriving from rock n roll. The Pop genre is often eclectic and uses features from other genres such as rock and country. There are elements of pop music that deviates it to  the rest, the often length of pop sing is short to medium length songs with often repetitive choruses and melodic tunes, with often catchy lyrics. So called 'pure music' lacks deep artistic depth but uses instrumentals such as drum, bass and electric guitar. They aim to make enjoyable music which means they collect mass audiences. They attract youth audiences and and are seen as an alternative softer version of rock and roll.

The term "pop song" is first recorded as being used in 1926, in the sense of a piece of music "having popular appeal". Hatch and Millward indicate that many events in the history of recording in the 1920s can be seen as the birth of the modern pop music industry, including in country, blues and hillbilly music.
The Oxford Dictionary of Music states that while pop's "earlier meaning meant concerts appealing to a wide audience ... since the late 1950s, however, pop has had the special meaning of non-classical music, usually in the form of songs, performed by such artists as the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, ABBA, etc". Grove Music Online also states that "... in the early 1960s [the term] ‘pop music’ competed terminologically with Beat music [in England], while in the USA its coverage overlapped (as it still does) with that of ‘rock and roll’".
From about 1967 the term was increasingly used in opposition to the term rock music, a division that gave generic significance to both terms. Whereas rock aspired to authenticity and an expansion of the possibilities of popular music, pop was more commercial, ephemeral and accessible. According to Simon Frith pop music is produced "as a matter of enterprise not art", is "designed to appeal to everyone" and "doesn't come from any particular place or mark off any particular taste". It is "not driven by any significant ambition except profit and commercial reward ... and, in musical terms, it is essentially conservative". It is, "provided from on high (by record companies, radio programmers and concert promoters) rather than being made from below ... Pop is not a do-it-yourself music but is professionally produced and packaged"

History of music video

Music video is a short film that goes with a piece of music. Videos are made to sell and promote the music, however over time priorities and financial distribution has completely changed. Music videos really came into action in the 1980s.
Music videos use a wide range of techniques including animation, live action and documentaries, using narrative or abstract film. Some combine different elements of film such an animatics and narrative while others make there films disjoined through a thematic approach.
in the early 1900's many 'short films' stemmed from Walt Disney theme songs and filmed alongside Disney films like 'Looney Toons'.
A lot of early music videos cloned the hollywood movie theme such as Madonna in 1985 with 'Material girl'.
the first visual jukebox was set up in France by artists such as Serge Gainsbourg, who used them as short films to accompany there music.
in the 1980s music videos became more mainstream, MTV was created as a modern development due to the inexpensive video recorders and editing software, it also the development of visual effects created with techniques such as compositing. Artists received much credit for the construction of there videos and Madonna's use of seductive appeal.
In modern day music videos are more accessible via media convergence through phone applications and accessibility to the internet. The use of Youtube, Itunes and Spotify are all modern examples of music video renaissance in comparison to the rare voice the videos had in the late 1900's. The debate at the moment is whether music videos are loosing value as they are conveyed everywhere and seen wherever whenever. On the other hand in the 60s 70'sd 80's music video was a lot more delicate and exciting as the visuals where rare and less accessible. Also ecause people these days have lot of software to watch these on and they can be illegally downloaded, meaning in the long run producers have less money to spend on production, which could be argues that they are lower equality and less 'special. However you could also say that the use of modern technology and the availability to watch worldwide has made more competition to create the best video and therefore produce powerful pieces of art, also the editing software could produce better creations overall in comparison to the older videos and therefore generates more of an audience.

Influences to our music video.

Kesha - Take it Off

This video uses powder paint - When analysing this video; the use of powder paint is really effective and mesmerising. The colours brighten up the whole scene and makes it feel magical. It shows that something so simple to make and produce can make a video seen so much more innovative and creates a happy mood, it is perfect for our target audience; Young girls. As you can tell Kesha also has paint all over her face and it shows that she is not afraid to get messy and in essence this fun and careless feel defines pop videos. Also the play fighting is also very effective as long as we do not make it look cliche   and cheesy.

This music video involves toy cars. We also wish to incorporate this in our video because it will create variety alongside realist performance. This music videos obviously uses a lot of editing which although looks very effective, we would struggle with editing our own video to this extent, as it is quite time consuming. We could display a scene using our hands to drive them however we don't want it to look too unprofessional so maybe a simple transitions and the burning of the car in the finale can be done with still image or less human control.

Katy Perry - Last Friday Night

Katy Perry uses mise en scene to dress up, exaggerate and incorporate humour of 'Teenage Dream'. She dresses as a geeky school girl which is a play on time, just like we wish to do in our own music video. The clothes she chooses to wear are over the top but it gets the message across. It makes the video that bit more interesting and pulls the audience into watching more as they see there idol in a different light.

Music Analysis with Goodwin

I chose to use this video as an example of how to apply Goodwin to a music video. Although rap/r&b does not have a relation to our group pop video, I felt it was important to analyse on videos that have a genre that is similar to what i enjoy, so I can apply that knowledge on our Pop Video.

Notions of looking:
This image reveals the exploitation of women as she lays on the bed half naked, this demonstrates the use of vouyerism as the camera concentrates on her chest where she is wearing a necklace saying 'Rocky' on it suggesting that she is his property, also the fact that the camera does concentrate on her face; but her body instead. The necklace also shows that the male has some sort of hold on the woman and it could symbolise that he is trying to convey tat he gets a lot of women, this is part of the 'male ego'.

                                                                          Intertextuality
The picture below shows the original ASAP Rocky video and the picture to the left is from the song Tyga 'Faded'. Tygas song was released in April 2012 whereas ASAP's song was published in May 2012. As you can see there is evidence of Intertextuality as they are both wearing big furry clothing and black shades. Other similar features is the use of Gold and the use of alcohol in the visuals. They both wear gold chains as-well, however some could argue that these are conventional rap/r&b conventions.

 Demands of the Record Label

Part of the branding process and demands of the Record Label are to ensure that the singer is well liked and has a good secure following. The more interaction the fans feel like they are receiving and the closer they feel to the singer the more intrigued they feel with the singer, his videos use close ups and medium close up to enforce this. the close up is also linked to the branding of the singer; his image has to be consistent so the viewers have a better understanding of the artist. For example in this image you can tell that he has Gold Grills which he wear in many of his videos increasing a feel of identity.

Genre Characteristics

Often in rap music they involve there friends in the music video, and referring to them through lyrics as 'Its just me and the motherfu**ers that I came with'. A lot of the artists in this genre talk of there journey from what they where doing before they became a rapper, the struggle they faces, who there friends where and how they are still by there side through all the bad times, and now there work has paid off they are all living 'the life' of fame and wealth. Another feature of the genre is the reference and visuals to money. The picture on the left shows stacks   of money in the music video by Rick Ross ft Jadakiss "Oil Money Gang" and similar to this music video. A lot of the time they smoke and want to convey themselves living the 'high life' as it is part of the branding of being 'laid back' and having no care in the world. Getting money and living the chilled life with girls drugs and wealth.

Links between the lyrics and visuals

There is no disjuncture or contradiction in this music video, the lyrics refer straight to the individuals.

For example, the reference to God is said through the lyrics 'In a mouth full of Gold' and the image to the left appears.

Another example is when he references a 'hoe' which is a derogatory word against women but is a typical convention in the genre of rap, the image to the left of a naked women appears.

The type of link in Goodwin terms is called 'Amplified'. The song has no solid meaning, therefore it is not illustrative. The song does replicate some of the moving image not making it a disjuncture. the video amplifies the feeling of power ASAP has with his wealth, and the images or women, gold and money amplify the strong sense of power through to his audience.

Rough ideas for our music video

Intertextuality

This is when music videos use previous themes in Fashion, Cinema, Art, TV and photography, in order to create a connection with the audience. They reference specific features that they want to get across in there individual music video, they do this to give the audience subliminal pleasure as they feel in touch with references that have been previously popular with a certain audience, whereas some people dont pick up on the use of Intertextuality however this does not effect there satisfaction of the video.
Examples of Intertexuality
Modern examples: Wrecking Ball - Miley Cyrus

This video references a previous popular music video called 'Nothing Compares 2u' by Sinead O’ Connor. Both music videos portray emotion with a use of close up shots, there image is also extremely similar. This can get artists in trouble for 'copying' ideas from other types of art, this example in particular has been in the press a lot recently as Sinead O'Connor accuses Miley of using her videos for inspiration, with similar music themes and imagery. This shows that Intertextuality can be dangerous in the music industry, however subtle intertextuality from multiple videos can be be very beneficial to the artist.

Script Analysis

Goodwin

Goodwin believes that these features are vital in a music video; he wrote these in his book 'Dancing In The Distraction Factory'
Goodwin's Theory:

1. Link between lyrics and visuals
2. Links between music and visuals
3. Genre characteristics
4. Intertextual reference
5. Notions of looking
6. The demands of a record label
7. Artist Motifs and Iconography

The demands of a record label means doing close ups and extreme close ups to help the audience recognise the singer, create a visual style and boost the branding.

Notion of looking has reference to Vouyerism and the 'male ego'. The use of filming can be explicit to both female and males which create a connection with the audience and the singer because they are seeing things that they do not have much real experience of seeing.

intertextuality as discussed previously is the referencing between similar features of music videos. this can generate nostalgic associations and new meanings.

When talking about links between lyrics and visuals and links between music and visuals, we are referencing three categories:

1. Illustrate - This is when music videos illustrate the meaning behind the song.

2. Amplify - Repeating the mood and meaning behind the song to confirm the understanding of the audience.

3. Disjuncture - This is when music videos have no real link to the meaning of the song and it is completely unrelated.

Chosen song for music video

Icona pop - I Love It

As we decided that our music video will be a genre of pop, Icona Pop was a great example of a recent and popular piece of music with a suitably spectacular video that relates much to its generic expectations, especially in the modern day party scene. We chose this because it is full of action and its use of exciting colourisation really suits the mood of the song. As girls; we can relate to the feminine side of the video, although slightly cliché it works well with the audience it is trying to hit; young girls.

The music video begins with a unique font which immediately states the name of the duo and the name of the song. the same shot is used at the end of the video, showing continuity.

Casual conversation before the song starts makes the audience feel more connected with the artists. This is a good technique as it conveys realism.
Using lyrics on the screen is a very original idea, however I think it makes the shot cheesy.

I like the idea of graffiti as it portrays the idea of 'I don't care' being a free spirit and surrounding yourself through words, memories and bright colours. In our music video it could be incorporated in a location that has graffiti; such as a skate park.

Freestyle dancing makes the mood of the video very relaxed, informality is suitable for those in the target audience who are young adults. This would be better then using choreographed dancing as there is a risk of it being amateur, so freestyle movements would be a good incorporation in out music video.

Using wacky shapes and replicating images is a very modern feature which gives a great illusion to the audience. This could definitely be used in out music video to break up images.

A party scene is really relevant to the song, its upbeat fast and crazy, if it is done properly it could be very effective and make the video more dynamic.

Student Reflection

Year 12 Film Openings

Research

I definitely learnt last year that research was a vital part of the process. It gave us an idea of how film opening are produced conventionally, learning this on an individual basis gave us all an insight of what is expected for an opening sequence, once we did this we could discuss how to change some conventional processes to make it more unique and eye catching. Reflecting on my research last year, I do believe I could have done more research on successful film sequences.

Planning

I learnt last year that the more planning there is, the smoother the production process will be. Communication between group members is vital so everyone is aware of there individual duties and responsibilities when it comes to the actual production. Also putting planning plans on the blog makes it available for all group members to look and remind themselves if they are unsure. Storyboarding and was a feature in last years planning that confirmed the groups final idea and made us as a group more confident in our plans.

Classwork and independent study

Keeping up with classwork was something I struggled with last year, I tended to leave work till last minute which meant that I had forgotten a lot of what was set which meant I had to look on other blogs as a guideline, which I realise now is not going to be good enough if I want to achieve better grades. Independent study is an opportunity to show that you know everything about your genre and its background, I have learnt that this can expand your knowledge and imagination of how to maker your music video really original.

Personal organisation

My organisation last year was not the best, I hadn't realised how far behind you can become and how hard t is and time consuming to get up to date, ensuring that your work is at the best standard, In reflection, I realise that you have to be organised especially when it comes to blogging and making sure the work is done so that it leaves lots of time for the filming and editing.

Filming

I discovered from filming our opening sequence that it is important to leave the filming with plenty of time, as we discovered there was many parts of it that we wanted to re-shoot but times where limited to are individual schedules. Especially if the location is far away, it is important
that you are prepared to travel there more than once if a problem occurs. Finally, we had a lot of issue last time with weather changes and lighting, so it is better to go to where you are filming at an earlier hour so you have more time to film before it goes dark.

Editing issues

The editing process last year was quite stressful, especially towards the end as we felt pressure to finish in time. It is easy to let one person do the editing but supporting that person or taking turns is important to making sure stress levels are down. Using software such as LiveType was challenging, but as we have less people in the class for the second year it should be less of a problem to ask for help.

Tracking your progress

To ensure I don't fall behind this year I will check my blog weekly and give myself aims of what I can be doing to get up to the standard I want to achieve. I can also compare with my classmates through conversation about how far they have got with it so I know I am on the right track, or even try and get ahead to ensure I achieve the best grades.

Evaluation skills

Overall this year I have learnt that it is extremely important to keep your blog up to date and remember to put regular updates on the group blog even if it may seem less irrelevant. From the filming module I also learnt that attendance is important as the absence of one can effect the whole intention of a lesson andcan in turn slow down the process.
