Music video is a short film that goes with a piece of music. Videos are made to sell and promote the music, however over time priorities and financial distribution has completely changed. Music videos really came into action in the 1980s.
Music videos use a wide range of techniques including animation, live action and documentaries, using narrative or abstract film. Some combine different elements of film such an animatics and narrative while others make there films disjoined through a thematic approach.
in the early 1900's many 'short films' stemmed from Walt Disney theme songs and filmed alongside Disney films like 'Looney Toons'.
A lot of early music videos cloned the hollywood movie theme such as Madonna in 1985 with 'Material girl'.
the first visual jukebox was set up in France by artists such as Serge Gainsbourg, who used them as short films to accompany there music.
in the 1980s music videos became more mainstream, MTV was created as a modern development due to the inexpensive video recorders and editing software, it also the development of visual effects created with techniques such as compositing. Artists received much credit for the construction of there videos and Madonna's use of seductive appeal.
In modern day music videos are more accessible via media convergence through phone applications and accessibility to the internet. The use of Youtube, Itunes and Spotify are all modern examples of music video renaissance in comparison to the rare voice the videos had in the late 1900's. The debate at the moment is whether music videos are loosing value as they are conveyed everywhere and seen wherever whenever. On the other hand in the 60s 70'sd 80's music video was a lot more delicate and exciting as the visuals where rare and less accessible. Also ecause people these days have lot of software to watch these on and they can be illegally downloaded, meaning in the long run producers have less money to spend on production, which could be argues that they are lower equality and less 'special. However you could also say that the use of modern technology and the availability to watch worldwide has made more competition to create the best video and therefore produce powerful pieces of art, also the editing software could produce better creations overall in comparison to the older videos and therefore generates more of an audience.
